As well as voice communication, cellular phones can send and receive fax and data, and digital phones also offer SMS, which is a system that can send text messages of up to 160 characters (or more in some systems), using the control channel normally used for signalling between the phone and the network. This means that they can be sent or received even if the phone is busy with a call, or if the recipient is in a meeting and can't take a voice call.
